How To Protect Your Energy

As an empath, protecting your own energy is so important and vital.

As a fellow empath, we tend to absorb other people’s energy, regardless if the other person is aware of this or not. When this happens, we often get confused on why we feel the way we feel or wonder how could we have gone from having a really good day to suddenly being in a terrible mood without knowing where this source came from?

You’ve probably experienced this more times than you wish you did.

Let’s say you’ve been having a really good, high-energy day and maybe a friend or a family member starts talking about their problems in life and how much life sucks and blah, blah, blah.

Suddenly, you feel like you’ve walked away from this conversation feeling low-energy and not feeling so good, even though their situation doesn’t pertain to you at all.

This is a good example of absorbing people’s energy.

When you aren’t careful with protecting your energy, you start to be affected by their low vibrations. It can cause more than just a bad mood. Sometimes, it can cause anxiety, depression, a feeling of unworthiness, and just so many more low vibrational emotions.

It’s like having your good day be taken away from you right before your eyes.

Luckily, there are many ways where you can protect your energy. It’s good to do this right before going out in public or before you interact with people so that you are protected from outside sources.

And don’t worry, it’s actually way easier than you think!

1. Visualize an energetic barrier

Yup! It’s that simple!

Visualization is one of the most powerful methods we have as spiritual beings. Our energy has the ability to create protection around us. We can either do this ourselves or call upon our higher protectors to help us out, which can range from angels, spirits, guides, gods, goddesses, your Higher Self, you name it!

You can do this using a guided meditation or honestly, you can even do it yourself!

There’s no wrong way of doing it!

Personally, what I like to do is visualize a golden light surrounding my body. I like to claim that only energy of love and compassion are allowed inside my barrier and anything that is not out of love or compassion is transmuted into light.

That way if you do run into some negative energy, you’ll be able to transform that energy into a more loving energy.

This goes into my next point on how to protect your energy.

2. Cut energetic cords

Cutting energetic cords is something my Reiki counselor taught me.

Basically, when we interact with one another, an energetic cord connects our spirits. From there, we have the ability to exchange energies. However, if you are an empath, you generally have to be careful with which energies you take in since you obviously don’t want to take in another negative energy that will affect you.

There are two things we can do. Just like I talked about with having an energetic barrier, we have the ability to transmute energy into loving light OR we can cut the energetic cords completely.

This can help keep us safe from taking on the energy of someone who may not have the best intentions for us or may not realize the negative energies they are projecting onto us.

I have to do this a lot with people and I usually like to do this with a guided mediation. I have one personally from my Reiki healer, but you can find many meditations on cutting energetic cords on Youtube!

Doing so allows us to disconnect from people’s energies in a loving and compassionate way.

3. Wear amulets or crystals

Certain amulets and crystals are also a way to protect your energy. You can find them in bracelets, necklaces, charms, or you can just carry the stone in your pocket!

You can go to your local crystal store or any reputable online store. Just make sure you do your research before investing in an amulet or crystal, especially if you go online since it’s a little more challenging to get a feel of an amulet/crystal.

I do have necklaces for protection, but sometimes what I also like to do is use crystals in my meditations to put in the intention of protecting my energy.

Some of my favorites are amethyst, clear quartz, black tourmaline, and pyrite.

Feel free to do your research when it comes to using amulets and crystals! And of course, find what best resonates with you!

You can’t go wrong as long as you put intention behind it. Remember: intention is the key!

4. Set boundaries

Setting boundaries is absolutely vital when it comes to protecting your energy.

Often, we can get shamed for setting boundaries, especially when it comes to family or close loved ones. People sometimes expect us to be selfless with our time and energy when really, we have all rights to set boundaries and say no.

I know it’s hard to say that when we’ve been programmed to give all our time and energy to others, but in order to help others, you have to take care of yourself and that includes taking care of your energy.

It is absolutely OK to say no or to put distance between yourself and another person if you feel drained being around them. You’re well-being is important and anyone who tells you otherwise are either toxic and use others for their benefit OR they genuinely feel the pressure of society’s norm and feel they have to be selfless in order to be a “good” person, thus, not knowing they have that right to put up boundaries also.

Choose to take care of yourself first because you should always come first.

5. Choose your content wisely

I think most of us are aware that when it comes to social media or the news, that there can be a lot of fear-based content out there. Personally, I believe there’s a reason for this, especially when it comes to the news.

Society tries to keep us in a fear-based state in order to control us into doing what they want us to do. Our energies actually do take in the energies of other people whether that’s in the news or watching/hearing drama on social media.

However, we luckily have the choice to take in this content.

I don’t have cable, therefore, I never watch the news and honestly, my life has been so much less stressful since I made that choice. I choose to take in more positive and uplifting content, which in return, makes me a more positive and uplifted person.

This is another way I help protect my energy.

I believe if we choose what we read or watch carefully, we can avoid lowering our vibrations and avoid the “fear trap”.

Instead of watching the news, watch some comedy or something uplifting like a motivational video. Instead of reading about drama, read a self-development book or anything you can immerge yourself in that you would like better.

Once you make the choice of putting in positive content, you’ll start to reflect a more positive outlook on your life, which is way better than a negative perspective.

Give it a try and see how you start to feel!

6. Alone time

Alone time is important for people who are empaths.

With all the busyness of the world, we tend to feel drained very easily.

I know this happens to me a lot when I’m around a large crowd or when I hang out with friends for a long period of time. Quite often, I will find myself feeling tried really quickly, especially if I’m hanging out with people.

Trust me, it’s not because you don’t want to be here. It’s most likely because you take on a lot of people’s energies all at once, which can drain your own energy very quickly.

That’s why alone time is very important for people who are empaths.

Alone time will help you recharge your own energy so you can continue to enjoy yourself around other people! So don’t look at it as a negative!

Look at it as a necessity of self-care!
